Does God Still Heal?

That is the question everyone is asking, whether out loud or to just to themselves. With so many hurting in our world, they can’t help but desire healing. After all, we all want to function properly and optimally.

When some think of the term “healing” they only associate it with something that is needed for our physical body. However, God is interested in our entire being and therefore wants us to be complete. Since he created every part of us, he want us to be functioning properly and optimally when it comes not only to our physical body, but also to our mental state, emotional well-being, relationships, spiritual lives and yes even our financial enterprises.

That may seem like a tall order, and you may wonder can God really heal us in each of these areas of our lives? Is there any proof that he is capable?

Well let me share with you a few examples of each from scripture:

Physical Healing:

“And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched” (Luke 8:43-44)

This woman received healing for her body after suffering for 12 long years.

Emotional Healing:

However this story continues with: “And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.” (Luke 8:45-48)

The story could have seemed done when she was physically healed, however, that wasn’t enough because God knew that suffering for 12 long years takes a toll on someone’s emotion well-being. Therefore, Jesus made sure to identify this woman and speak uplifting words to her. These words did not benefit her physically as we see in verse 44. No these words penetrated deep into her emotions and reassured her that not only was she healed but now she was whole as her emotions received the comfort and peace they needed.

Mental Healing:

In Luke chapter 8 verses 22 through 39 we are provided a story of Jesus healing a man possessed of devils. For sake of time I will include only a few verses here but I encourage you to read the whole story.

In verses 35 and 36 we read “Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.”

Notice the man was healed again physically when the devil was driven out of him, however, once again due to God’s compassion we see this man is also now “in his right mind.” His mental state had been restored. No longer would he have to battle with the negative thoughts that plagued him, as now he knew who to turn to.

Relationship Healing:

A few verses later in verse 39 Jesus instructs this man “Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.”

Jesus could have left this man to deal with the ramifications of his recent healing but he was driven to see this man complete and fully restored so he sends him home to his family and let them enjoy the fruit of the healing Jesus had brought. The years of being possessed by devils I’m sure had driven a wedge between the man and his loved ones so Jesus sets it right by sending him home to see the change and to receive the healing for themselves as well.

Spiritual Healing:

Well obviously from the previous story we see that the man was delivered from devils – I mean what more proof do we need?

Financial Healing:

In Matthew 17 we are told a story about how tribute collectors asked Peter about whether Jesus paid tribute or not and Peter declares he does. After providing a simple lesson to Peter about this interaction Jesus says in verse 27 “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”

Why did Jesus tell him to do this? Because we read in Matthew 8:20 “And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” This shows us that Jesus did not appear to have a lot of earthy resources. He lived simply and was not loaded with money. That’s why for Peter to land a fish with a coin in its mouth was a financial miracle.

While these are short simple examples to show that God can heal us in every area of our lives, there are numerous examples in both the old and new testaments that prove this point.

But I know first-hand that God can and still does heal us in these areas in our lives. I have at one time or another received healing in each of these areas personally. I have had my knee miraculously healed. I have had the emotional abuse I suffered at the hands of my mother healed and our relationship restored. I have experienced the mental release of tormenting thoughts and temptations when delivered from lust and depression. And I have had several unexpected financial blessings come my way. For example, I had someone hand me $200 on a day I had a bill due for $200 and I had been out of work for 13 months with no way to pay it and they didn’t even know I needed it.

So I know personally that God does heal and he is concerned about our overall well-being. He is the same yesterday, today and forever! And because “For there is no respect of persons with God” (Romans 2:11), if he did it for those in the Bible and he did it for me – YES – he can and wants to do it for you too!

God Bless!

Rick
